Making Light Entries: The Master List

Posted by Abi on Saturday 3 May 2008 at 20:19

Below is an initial list of postings that have been active recently, to the best of my memory. I have noted caches that I have URLs for, kindly provided by people in these threads. I am digging through my own caches. If you have better caches of data, please send them to me (abi at the domain we're on), Patrick, and Teresa (their initials at panix.com). We will update this as we go.

(Why, yes, there is a spreadsheet!)

I don't know nuthin' 'bout real computing, I don't even know what was being asked, but on the outside chance I've performed some idiot savant miracle,

first I went to Making Light, and yes there was a blank page.

Next I went to google.com and did a search for "Making Light."

Then I clicked on the cache [cache of http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/ as retrieved on May 1, 2008 18:41:24 GMT.] for it http://209.85.207.104/search?q=cache:bXNffxgXZ5MJ:nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/+Making+LIght:&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us&client=firefox-a

In case you think it's important and can't get the same result, I copied the HTML and pasted it into a WORD doc, 25pp. long.

I've saved it, too. If it's needed, let me know and we can figure our how to make the handoff.

I really hope this helps. Oh, be sure to AV scan whatever you're sent, just to be on the safe side.

Peace.

I have copies of every post since "Forty years gone" in my RSS reader, but none of the comments. If that's any help, give me a shout at this email addy.

abi on Saturday 3 May 2008 at 22:08

We're pretty much OK for posts. It's the comments that we're missing, because Google caching cuts off after a while.

Also, if you have been commenting on older posts (like the Darwin fish post, which had a recent spate of activity), flag them so at least I know what we're missing.

I'm collecting a few things here and there, and will update the list soon.

Mailed Open Thread 105 to Patrick at Panix. Goes up to 27 April at 12:20 AM.

PNH's spam traps sometimes lose my mail, so look for it. I sent it from my higgins2k at gmail dot com account.

Carol Witt on Saturday 3 May 2008 at 22:41

I've just sent a copy of Feeling the Heat that goes up to 31 comments.

jodyinparis on Saturday 3 May 2008 at 22:41

just to clarify what i'm looking for -- because i do appear to have google caches of posts back to february 28 : all you want is comments, and only comments not already covered in the spreadsheet?
sorry for sounding so stupid, but ... i must say I also have no idea of how to send you whatever I do find. so i'll let you know if i find something and then you can tell me.

abi on Saturday 3 May 2008 at 23:26

Ideally, saving the page as HTML or saving the complete page (use the File/Save menu on your browser and be expansive).

Tell us what you've got, zip them, and send them to Patrick, Teresa and me.

Thanks

Do you want me to shoot you copies of the stuff I mentioned in the techie thread?

don delny on Sunday 4 May 2008 at 00:26

let me try that again.

Abi, you said "Tell us what you've got, zip them, and send them to Patrick, Teresa and me."

I've got s/i/g/n/a/l/ files, I've posted a list in the Techie thread. Do you want me to spam all three of you with what I have, or should I await further instructions?

David Harmon on Sunday 4 May 2008 at 01:09

I'm guessing/hoping that you've already been googling:

'' site:http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/ "Comments posted to Making Light by" ''

That lists 624 hits which seem to be the View-All-By pages. Definitely a program is called for....

Abby on Sunday 4 May 2008 at 01:16

I'm a lurker with several ML pages open in tabs. The only one you seem to need is the complete "Deep Value", so I've just saved a copy of the page with all 434 comments. I'll try to zip and email in a few minutes. I also have 72 comments on my version of "Amsterdam" (versus 70 in the spreadsheet), but it looks like the last 4 are spam. I haven't checked my cache yet.

Chris Sullins on Sunday 4 May 2008 at 03:55

Earlier I posted Google Reader for blog posts, but it also works for comments (as long as someone, somewhere decided to track them in Google Reader). They can be seen at links such as the following, where ######.xml indicates the post number and n=# is the number of comments to show (I chose an arbitrarily high one):

http://www.google.com/reader/atom/feed/http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/archives/010186.xml?n=3000

There were a few that weren't tracked at all, and the order isn't necessarily right, but it's pretty comprehensive. I gathered all the xml files and uploaded them to my web site in a zipped folder.

I'm subscribed to a few threads via Google Reader, so I don't think I have cached pages, but I have the text of the comments themselves. I might have some of the more recent comments (I see 187 on Little Brother; 105 on Theresa in the Observer, etc.) Please let me know via email if there's something I can do to help.

Earl Cooley III on Sunday 4 May 2008 at 05:29

Well, I saved a Google cache of my own comments from 09.27.06 to 04.28.08, but I'm set up so that the browser cache on my PC is wiped every time I exit the browser.

David Goldfarb on Sunday 4 May 2008 at 06:20

As it happens, I made a new comment on "Grease Monkey" last night -- nothing it would be too hard to reconstruct, just a note that Tim Eldred is putting new material up on the book's site.

At this point, I'm having trouble figuring out what names still need to be googled for comments... perhaps an updatable list somewhere? Specifically, it would be really nice to have "last update" entries for the member-to-google lists, and for the global "fixing the threads" lists above.

David Harmon on Sunday 4 May 2008 at 15:11

More specifically, it would be nice to have a list of names with "have their comments up to foo/bar/08", and perhaps a separate list "names that need scanning". Nice, but iduno how practical....

Jon Meltzer on Sunday 4 May 2008 at 20:48

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: The MSN search cache appears to be current and complete. I have tried several lookups and have found entries in the hundreds up to April 30th. That includes several on the chart. 906 comments in Open Thread 105, all there. USE MSN SEARCH.
